Protected Lepidoptera in Denmark

In Denmark we only have few protections of insects. Five butterflies are protected directly and two moths indirectly by official legislation. Only two of these species, C. arion amd E. aurinia, have populations in Denmark, 3 are exting long ago, C. hero, P. mnemosyne and L. dispar, and the two moths are only found as stray migrants and are not resident.

The legislation only forbids any kind of collecting of the species, and does not bother with the conservation of the habitat. Thia issue is now covered by the Habitat Directive.

Besides the official protections, the lepidopterological and entomological societies have agreed to make a protection of further 4 butterfly species and one moth species, see below. This agreement was made partly to ensure, that collectors wouldn't be blamed if (when) the species disappears and also to try to force authorities to take actions to conserve the habitats.
